While assistive technology companies do "good deeds" with their work, they are facing extinction. As technology becomes cheaper and cheaper, mainstream products applied to assistive needs becomes more of a reality. Apple is a great example of this with the latest iPhone and the "talking" iPod you mentioned several months ago. R&D at assistive technology companies are recreating the wheel from stone while mainstream companies are flying on jet packs. Assistive technology users will more and more find mainstream products answering their needs. While sad for the assistive technology companies, it is exciting to think of a blind person picking something off the shelf at Best Buy just as you or I do. When I watch a blind friend navigate on his iPhone, it is obvious to me that mainstream technology designs are beginning to capture not just the "normal" user, but ALL users. Very exciting stuff....
